Newly surfaced US Justice Department documents linked to late financier Jeffrey Epstein reference Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2017 trip to Israel, triggering debate in India.
Among the emails released is a July 2017 message from Epstein to someone named Y. Jabor, claiming that Modi “took advice, and danced and sang in Israel for the benefit of the US president,” and noting that the two leaders had met a few weeks earlier.
The email does not provide evidence or further context for these claims.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs acknowledged Modi’s official visit to Israel in July 2017 but dismissed the email’s characterizations. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “Beyond the fact of the Prime Minister’s official visit to Israel, the rest of the statements in the email are baseless speculations by a convicted criminal and should be rejected outright.”
The opposition Congress party reacted sharply, describing the alleged claims as “extremely shameful” and demanding clarification.
They emphasised Epstein’s assertion that Modi “took advice and danced and sang in Israel for the benefit of the US president” and questioned the nature of his interactions with Epstein prior to his visits to Israel and the United States.
