Sir Richard Shirreff, former deputy supreme allied commander of NATO, has warned that the world could already be on the brink of a third world war amid the rapidly escalating conflict in the Middle East.

According to international media, Shirreff said that as a former senior commander he does not use the term lightly and that current global tensions, particularly following the recent war between the US, Israel and Iran, have created a situation that could lead to World War III.

The warning comes after a series of dramatic military events across the Middle East: coordinated strikes by U.S. and Israeli forces on Iranian targets, extensive Iranian missile and drone counterattacks on bases and facilities in the Gulf, and growing involvement of regional actors.

Meanwhile, Shirreff’s remarks reflect broader anxiety among defense experts that the 2026 Iran conflict, sparked by the killing of Iran’s supreme leader and subsequent cross‑border attacks, could escalate beyond a regional confrontation.

Analysts note that while the term “World War III” is debated in international affairs, the intensity and geographic spread of the fighting highlights how dangerous the present moment has become.

However, governments around the world have urged restraint and called for diplomatic engagement to prevent a further global escalation.
