Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu ratified a new legislation banning the entry of Israeli passport holders into the island nation, in a move expressing solidarity with Palestine.

The bill, which was passed by the Maldivian parliament, received presidential assent on Tuesday.

In a statement, the President’s Office said, “The ratification reflects the government’s firm stance in response to the continuing atrocities and ongoing acts of genocide committed by Israel against the Palestinian people.”

It added, “The Maldives reaffirms its resolute solidarity with the Palestinian cause.”

According to AFP, the law will be enforced immediately.

The Maldives, a popular tourist destination known for its scenic beaches and pristine lagoons, has seen Israeli visitors among its foreign tourist arrivals. However, under the new ban, Israelis will no longer be permitted to enter the archipelago.

Official data showed that in February alone, the Maldives welcomed around 214,000 tourists, including 525 from Israel.

The Maldives did not maintain diplomatic ties with Israel until the 1990s, and the travel ban on Israelis was lifted 2010. In 2019, both countries moved towards formalising relations.

However, President Muizzu recently faced growing pressure from opposition parties and political allies to take a firm stand amid Israel’s ongoing assault on Gaza.
