A man entered a mosque in the UK's Manchester carrying an axe on Tuesday evening.
Citing witnesses, media reports said that the suspect, thought to be in his late 40s, entered the mosque armed with the axe. Four people immediately managed to overpower him.
There were around 5,000 worshippers inside the mosque at the time. On getting information, the police reached the mosque and took the suspect into custody for “acting suspiciously” and carrying offensive weapon.
Mosque officials ensured a safe evacuation. Fortunately, no one was injured during the confrontation. The suspect remains in custody for questioning as police continue their investigation into the incident.
In a statement on X, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: "I am concerned to hear of the incident at Manchester Central Mosque last night. I know this will be worrying for Muslim communities, especially during Ramadan, a time of peace and reflection."
"My thanks go to the volunteers and emergency services for their quick response. We have provided up to £40 million funding for additional security at mosques, Muslim schools and community centres, and will continue to act to ensure communities are able to live without fear."
