Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has strongly criticised the Australian leadership over the incident that took place in Sydney.

Netanyahu alleged that the Australian government fuelled anti-Jewish sentiment, claiming that when such sentiments were rising, Australia’s leadership remained silent and failed to take any preventive action.

It may be recalled that a day earlier, two armed individuals opened fire on civilians at Sydney’s famous Bondi Beach, killing 16 people and injuring 40 others.

Australian police have declared the incident an act of terrorism, stating that one of the attackers was killed during the incident, while the second assailant was taken into custody.

According to Australian media reports, one of the attackers was bravely overpowered by a civilian present at the scene, who risked his own life, disarmed the gunman, and saved several lives.

The New South Wales Police Commissioner said the deceased attacker was identified as 50-year-old Sajid Akram, while the injured attacker was identified as 24-year-old Naveed Akram.

Police further revealed that the killed attacker had held a firearm licence for the past 10 years and was also a member of a gun club.
