The US has approved a potential $1.96 billion weapons sale to Saudi Arabia. The deal is aimed at strengthening the kingdom’s air defence capabilities.

The proposed deal includes up to 20,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon Systems (APKWS) and related warheads.

The US Navy describes the APKWS as a precision-guided system designed to destroy targets while reducing collateral damage.

The State Department said the sale would support US foreign policy and national security goals by enhancing the security of Saudi Arabia.

The announcement comes as security concerns grow in the Gulf region. Saudi Arabia faces renewed tensions with Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement after missile attacks were reported against Saudi territory.

The principal contractor for the proposed sale will be BAE Systems, according to the State Department.

The approval is part of ongoing US efforts to strengthen the defence capabilities of regional partners as conflicts and security threats continue to reshape the Middle East.
