A day earlier, Pakistan proposed gradual payment of August’s electricity bills over three months for consumers not eligible for subsidies and using up to 200 monthly units.

According to sources, the Washington-based global lender has approved Pakistan's proposal, but in exchange, demanded an up to 50 percent hike in gas prices.

"The final approval to collect bills in installments will be taken by the interim Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar and his cabinet," the sources said on Thursday.

Sources added that about 4 million electricity consumers are likely to get temporary relief from this initiative.

However, the IMF has rejected Pakistan's plan to provide relief to consumers using up to 400 units of electricity per month.
